It’s difficult to imagine a finer venue for Newcastle to play their first Champions League match in 20 years than San Siro. While St James’ Park will be booming in a few weeks for their first European home game in years, Eddie Howe’s side’s trip to Milan on Tuesday will undoubtedly be a remarkable occasion.

Of course, the visitors are traveling to Milan with the goal of competing even in a really difficult group. The Magpies have been rated as second-favorites to advance from a group that also includes PSG and Borussia Dortmund. However, putting Howe’s team among the favorites in this pool may be a bit premature, given Milan’s strong European pedigree.

Milan has an advantage in terms of experience.
The hosts advanced to the Champions League semi-finals last season, and their record in the early stages of the competition is excellent. They have only been eliminated from the first round of the Champions League in one of their last 14 seasons, thus they cannot be written off in this group.

The Rossoneri have a more seasoned team led by Olivier Giroud. The French forward has scored in three of Milan’s last four games, totaling four goals in that span.

The striker scored five goals in seven games for Milan during their run to the Champions League quarterfinals, with four of those coming in six group stage matches. Back him to maintain his strong form against a Newcastle side that has already been ripped apart by Evan Ferguson and Darwin Nunez this season.

While Newcastle should be wary of the hosts, Milan have struggled defensively this season. The Rossoneri were recently defeated 5-1 by Inter Milan, marking the third consecutive game in which they failed to keep a clean sheet.

Last season, the Rossoneri surrendered in eight of their twelve games in this tournament. They will also face a Newcastle team that has scored in four of their opening five games, only been shut out by Manchester City.

This should be an open game given that both teams have failed to keep clean sheets this season, with both surrendering in all but one of their meetings. While Giroud has been in terrific form for the hosts, Newcastle has a strong attacking lineup that includes Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, and Miguel Almiron. Given this, bet on both teams to score in this match.
