AC Milan held talks for £30m rated player Newcastle United and Benfica are also interested

Newcastle United, AC Milan, and Benfica were all interested in Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz this summer, but the Magpies were turned off by a £30 million asking price, according to Football Transfers.
Tino Livramento was signed by Newcastle United from Southampton in the summer. Although he was one of many high-profile departures from St. Mary’s, offensive midfielder Alcaraz remained.

The 20-year-old piqued the Saints’ interest, and it was recently revealed that the Magpies were also interested in him.

However, new information about the former Racing Club talent has emerged. According to Football Transfers, Newcastle were not the only clubs interested, with Serie A giants and Portuguese club Benfica also in negotiations.

However, Eddie Howe and Newcastle were turned off by Southampton’s asking price. The Saints wanted £30 million for Alcaraz, but there is ‘hope’ that they will reconsider in the January transfer window.

Alcaraz’s future at Southampton has been questioned. He not only made an impression in the Premier League, but the early phases of his time under Russell Martin’s guidance indicate he may not see much play this season.

He’s played six Championship games in total, but hasn’t started since the 2-1 win against QPR. He started three of the first four league games, but had to settle for substitute appearances against Sunderland, Leicester City, and Ipswich Town before going unnoticed against Middlesbrough.

In the winter, his condition may pique the interest of potential admirers. Alcaraz has demonstrated his abilities, and many would have thought he’d be a useful asset at Championship level, but if he isn’t going to play as much under Martin, a transfer elsewhere may be best for all.

Half a season of not playing much will not improve his value, thus he may end up departing for less than the £30 million summer valuation later on. But only time will tell if the interest from elsewhere returns.
