Southampton injury setback as defender sidelined for Leeds United battle

SAINTS defender Juan Larios will be out for an extended period of time after suffering an injury when on the verge of returning.

The Spanish teenager has not played for Saints since a hamstring injury in November 2022, following his summer deadline day transfer.

Larios, 19, returned to action in March with an under-21 appearance in front of old coach Ruben Selles, but only lasted 12 minutes before being hurt again.

Larios is regarded highly by his current boss Russell Martin and was fully trained with the first team during the September international break.

However, the former Manchester City left-back was injured during training and Martin has now stated that he will be unavailable for selection in the foreseeable future.

“We had a major setback with Juan, so he is no longer on his way back,” Martin revealed. He’ll be out for at least another couple of months.

“It’s really insignificant, and I’m devastated for him.” He’s a great kid who deserves better luck than he’s had thus far.

“Juan is in rehab, which is frustrating for everyone here.” It’s not his fault or the fault of the medical team. “Something like this just happens.”

“The amount of work and care that has gone into him to gradually integrate him couldn’t have been taken any slower than we have done,” he stated.

“Unfortunately for Juan, it’s just one of those things.” We’ll be there for him; he’s a great young player who was just getting started.
