Tottenham captain who has been managing a groin injury for the first month of the 2023/24 season which has seen him miss team training

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min is a doubt for this weekend’s Premier League match against Luton Town. The South Korean international has started every league game this season, however a groin injury has forced him to come off early in several games, as Ange Postecoglou said this weekend.

“Look, he wasn’t 100 percent, but I had a chat with him yesterday and he was desperate to play,” Postecoglou said after Liverpool’s victory. “He said he’d give what he could, and he did.” He was never going to play the entire 90 minutes; we were always going to give him an hour or two, but he once again led from the front and was the one doing the pushing. He also scored, so fantastic captain’s effort.”

As a result, there have been concerns over his availability for the weekend, with Spurs attempting to control his workload, which has included missing training, so that he can continue playing. However, it appears that Son’s injury concerns have abated in the last week, as the 31-year-old was photographed in training on Wednesday.

With Manor Solomon joining Ivan Perisic and Brennan Johnson on the sidelines, Postecoglou’s offensive options for the trip to Kenilworth Road are limited, so Son’s return in training will be a significant boost. The absence of a crucial trio will also provide opportunities for several fringe players like as Alejo Veliz, while academy youngster Jamie Donley might also stake a claim amid the injury crisis.

Postecoglou admitted that James Maddison has not been 100 percent fit in recent weeks, but his near-full-game stint against Liverpool and call-up to the England squad appear to confirm he will be good for the weekend. Other players who could miss games in the near future include Yves Bissouma and Destiny Udogie, who are both on four and three yellow cards, respectively.
