Sunderland skipper could become the center of a local bidding war as Manchester City and Manchester United in battle to sign the teenager

Sunderland goalkeeper Matthew Young could become the focus of a local bidding war as Manchester City and Manchester United keep an eye on his progress.

During the summer transfer window, the City Football Academy sold England Under-21 goalkeeping hero James Trafford to Burnley for £19 million. The academy has a strong goalkeeping department, with Ederson and Stefan Ortega representing the first team.

Meanwhile, Scotland Under-21 goalkeeper Cieran Slicker joined Ipswich Town in July after a successful loan spell with Manchester City’s academy.

Manchester City goalkeeping star and two-time Premier League winner Joe Hart famously made 348 first-team appearances during a 12-year career at the Etihad Stadium after signing as a teenager from Shrewsbury in 2006.

City Football Academy scouts are now on the lookout for another prospective teenage goalkeeper, with Manchester City’monitoring’ the progress of Sunderland goalkeeper Matthew Young.

According to writer Mark Douglas of The i Newspaper, the 16-year-old is attracting interest from both Manchester City and Manchester United.

Young, who made his Sunderland debut during preseason, has been compared to England’s Jordan Pickford, who transferred to Everton from the Stadium of Light in 2017 for £30 million.

This season, the teenager has appeared in four Premier League 2 fixtures as well as two U18 Premier League matches.

Young has two PL2 clean sheets so far this season, with Manchester City winning both competitions last season.

The 16-year-old might join Sunderland’s first-team squad in the future and is on the FA’s radar for a possible call-up.

Sunderland are now vying for promotion back to the Premier League and are in a play-off position following a strong start to the Sky Bet Championship season.

The Black Cats sit fourth in the leaderboard, having won six of their ten league games.
