Four times mistakes the Blues made during a transfer window that cost them the promotion to the premier league

The choice to sign Viktor Gyokeres on a permanent basis in the summer of 2021 seemed risky, but it has paid off for them and nearly propelled them to the Premier League.

Even though he has missed much of the season, Callum O’Hare has been a fantastic acquisition.

Gustavo Hamer, like Gyokeres, developed into a good player throughout his time at St Andrew’s and the Coventry Building Society Arena before being sold for a large fee this summer.

It’s only fair to wait until the end of the season to see how many of their summer purchases have paid off – but they’ve certainly brought in some excellent players, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them in the promotion mix again at the end of this season.

But in this article, we’ll look at four occasions when Coventry got it wrong in the transfer market.

Do you agree with these four suggestions?

This was actually quite amusing, however you had to sympathize with the player in this circumstance.

Adaramola had joined the Sky Blues on loan from Crystal Palace in the later stages of July last year, and he appeared to be a potential successor for Ian Maatsen.

Given how valuable the Dutchman is, the Palace man had large shoes to fill and was unable to do so, making only one competitive appearance for the Sky Blues, which came in the EFL Cup.

In September, little over a month after joining, he was returned to Selhurst Park.

Despite this, the Sky Blues were able to bring in some replacements after Hyam’s transfer to Blackburn in the summer of 2022, with Callum Doyle, Jonathan Panzo, and Luke McNally all doing well.

However, Hyam is a superb Championship defender who has been with the club since their League Two days, so it’s a shame they were unable to keep him.

If Mark Robins had a choice, he probably would have kept the central defender at the club but his hand may have been forced by then-owners SISU.

Many Coventry fans will have been relieved to see Enobakhare return after he scored six goals in 18 league appearances for them during the 2018/19 season.

He returned to the club in the summer of 2021, but only made one competitive appearance for the Sky Blues before his contract was cancelled in November of that year.

The forward was signed on a free transfer, but it was plainly the incorrect decision. Fortunately, they probably didn’t spend a lot of money on him in terms of pay.

Waghorn joined the Midlands outfit in 2021.

Again, he arrived on a free transfer, but the signing was a mistake, with the player scoring twice and assisting three times in 42 appearances for Robins’ team.

He spent two years with the club before being released in the summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at Huddersfield Town.

Since then, the seasoned striker has joined Derby County in League One.
