Sheffield United have announced the closure of their popular Meadowhall superstore.

The club stated in a statement this morning that it will close for the final time on Sunday evening, and that it is ‘disappointed’ with the decision, which comes after the Blades’ lease at the well-known centre expires.

“Following the expiry of the lease agreement on our store at Meadowhall, the club is disappointed to advise that the store will permanently close at 5pm on Sunday, October 22, 2023,” United said in a statement.

“Initially opened in November 2019, the store was a resounding success providing the convenience of purchasing Blades clothing, gifts and souvenirs.

“As a result of the lease expiry, and a subsequent rolling term agreement, several alternative store sites were reviewed in conjunction with Meadowhall as the existing unit was no longer available, but unfortunately a commercially viable alternative was unable to be identified.”

Sheffield United products will still be available in Meadowhall, according to the Blades, thanks to an agreement with JD Sports.

In addition, the club’s Bramall Lane superstore will remain open, with things being accessible online.

The closing of the Blades’ club shop at Meadowhall comes only months after the closure of the Sheffield Wednesday store in the city centre in June.

The Owls store first opened as a temporary pop-up shop in December 2018 and has since been a popular destination for Owls supporters wishing to purchase Wednesday items ranging from jerseys to key rings and everything in between.

The last surviving Wednesday shopping option is the Owls Megastore at Hillsborough Stadium.

Wednesday stated that its store closed because Meadowhall officials exercised an option to cancel their contract with the club owing to expansion plans including the nearby Oasis Food Court.

Meanwhile, Meadowhall has confirmed that when Sports Direct and Frasers open in the old Debenhams shop at the centre, they will be on the upper level and the ground floor, respectively.

Frasers Group has leased a two-story property at the end of The Avenue, formerly known as Park Lane, for two of its most well-known brands.
