Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell gets brutally honest about Cam Akers’ potential season-long injury on Sunday

During their Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons, the Minnesota Vikings suffered yet another devastating injury blow. According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that running back Cam Akers suffered a left Achilles injury during the game.

“I can’t confirm the severity at this time, but that’s what we’re fearing,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said after the team’s 31-28 victory.

Cam Akers has suffered an Achilles injury for the second time in his NFL career. In the first game of the Los Angeles Rams’ 2021 NFL season, he tore his right Achilles tendon. As a result, Akers was placed on season-ending injured reserve by the Rams.

After tearing his right Achilles two years ago, Cam Akers was one of the first football players to undergo SpeedBridge surgery. The breakthrough cut recovery time by four to six months.

The Rams’ goal at the time was for Akers to play in the NFL playoffs in 2021. In Super Bowl LVI, Los Angeles defeated the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cam Akers backed up starter Alexander Mattison prior to his potential season-ending injury. The former had 38 all-purpose yards before the left the game against the Falcons.

This season, the Vikings have been plagued by injuries. Justin Jefferson, Minnesota’s Pro Bowl wide receiver, has missed the last four games due to a hamstring injury. Jefferson injured his hamstring in Week 5’s 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

To make matters worse, starting quarterback Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles in Week 8’s 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Cousins will miss the remainder of the 2023 NFL season.

Despite these devastating injuries, Kevin O’Connell has made the necessary adjustments. After a sluggish 1-4 start to the season, the Vikings have won four straight. The Vikings will look to maintain their momentum against the New Orleans Saints in Week 10.

Here’s also wishing Cam Akers a full and speedy recovery from his injury.
