Newcastle United handed injury ‘boost’ as key players called up for International duty

Two Newcastle United players have been called up to the latest England squad – including Callum Wilson. Wilson and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen are the joint-top English-scorers in the Premier League so far this campaign with seven goals apiece.

Wilson suffered a hamstring injury that forced him out of the midweek play against Borussia Dortmund. Eddie Howe said after the game that Wilson would be evaluated before the meeting against his old team, Bournemouth, on Saturday. Howe stated: “We are incredibly stretched out since Callum felt a strain in his hamstring, which forced our hand as well. [Whether he can play against Bournemouth] is still up in the air.

However, Wilson’s selection in this team raises the possibility that his injury is not too serious and that he will play on Saturday night at Vitality Stadium. The former Middlesbrough boss has also called up Kieran Trippier, who has emerged as one of Sothgate’s most reliable players in recent months. Trippier has been capped 45 times for his country; his only goal for England came in the 2018 World Cup semi-final. This season, he has recorded seven assists across all competitions for the Magpies.

However, there was no place for Nick Pope in Southgate’s squad as he opted to select Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone. No goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than Pope this season with Johnstone the only man who can match his current haul of five.

Even though Southgate was present at St. James’ Park for the weekend’s victory over Arsenal, where Sean Longstaff made a great showing, the manager has not acknowledged the midfielder’s outstanding recent play. The winner of that particular match, Anthony Gordon, has also not been called up to play for his country, even though he was named Player of the Tournament as Lee Carsley’s team won in Georgia and Romania during the summer and has been one of Newcastle’s most reliable players thus far this season.

After defeating Italy in the final round of international matches, England qualified for Euro 2024 and will play two elimination matches to round up the campaign. On Wednesday, November 17, England will host Malta at Wembley at 7:45 p.m. UK time. On Monday, November 20, England will travel to Skopje to play North Macedonia at 7:45 p.m. UK time.

If England wins both of these games, they will top their qualifying group. In another match in the group, Italy will play North Macedonia first and then Ukraine in what is expected to be a winner-take-all match at Germany’s BayArena.

The complete England squad is as follows: Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins, and Callum Wilson.
