Gareth Southgate has called Cole Palmer up to England’s senior squad hours after the midfielder netted a last minute equaliser for Chelsea against old club Manchester City.

Chelsea’s star Following his heroics against Manchester City, Cole Palmer has been called up to the England squad for this month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

The 21-year-old, who scored a 95th-minute penalty to earn a point against his former club, was overlooked by Gareth Southgate earlier this week, but has been drafted in to cover injuries to James Maddison, Callum Wilson, and Jude Bellingham.

Palmer has been given a late nod alongside former City team-mate Rico Lewis, who like Palmer has never been called up to England’s senior team before. The duo have a decent chance of making their debuts too considering the calibre of opposition.

Palmer has been a revelation since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer. He has four goals in 11 games and is arguably the Blues’ standout player this season. On Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur came from behind three times to earn a 4-4 draw against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Lewis has been attracting attention. The 18-year-old, who can play full back and central midfield, has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season and has received high praise from Guardiola, who declared last month that he was one of the best players he had ever coached.
