Pierce Charles and Declan Moses of Sheffield Wednesday have both been called up to the Northern Ireland U19s squad.
The club announced on their website that they will compete in a mini tournament against Portugal, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Former West Bromwich Albion centre-back Gareth McAuley will be in charge.
Both players played in the U19s’ most recent game, a 3-2 loss to Italy. Moses made his debut, scoring in the second half.
Both Charles and Moses have been regulars for Wednesday’s U21 team, which has had a successful season thus far. They are currently third in their professional development league, seven points back of Sheffield United.
Could Charles make his debut for the first team?
Danny Rohl, the first team manager, has taken note of Charles’ performance.
Last week, Rohl mentioned the possibility of Charles playing for the first team.
He said: “He’s very good on the grass. He can play football and he has a lot of solutions, which is something that I like. He’s trained very hard with the first team, and if he keeps training hard then maybe there’s a chance to come in.
“But for the time being, I’m very happy with both goalkeepers who are here, and it’s a challenge.” “I believe the goalkeeping group is strong, which is important for us.”
Charles’ strong start to the season for the U21s could lead to his first team debut this season.
After Cameron Dawson gave up four goals in Saturday’s loss to Millwall, Rohl has recently hinted at making a change at goalkeeper.
