Wayne Rooney sweating on injury concerns ahead of Sheffield Wednesday meeting the Owls are bottom of the Championship as Rooney hope to snatch 3 points

Birmingham City are dealing with a slew of ailments ahead of next weekend’s Championship encounter against Sheffield Wednesday at home. Wayne Rooney’s team is mired in a rut, having won just one of the former England captain’s five games in command.

They will, however, like their chances of snapping their losing streak against a Wednesday team that is currently bottom of the division. Despite improved results under a new manager in Danny Röhl, the Owls have lost four of their last five games and will be eager to put things right at St Andrew’s.

Defender Kevin Long (calf) and Lee Buchanan (ankle) are just two of the players over whom Rooney has doubts.

While the former may be sidelined – “he hurt his calf and hasn’t trained in a few days,” according to Rooney – the latter may be back.

“I’m hoping Lee will be available for Sheffield Wednesday,” stated the Blues manager. Keshi (Anderson) and Tyler Roberts may take a little longer as well, but we are steadily regaining players. We’re hoping to have Lee back for Sheffield Wednesday.”

George Hall (hamstring) travelled to Sunderland with the team for their last fixture before the international break but Rooney decided against including him in the squad as he manages his return.

In addition to the aforementioned players, the Blues have been without long-term injury sufferers Tyler Roberts (calf) and Alfie Chang (knee).

Wednesday are without Juan Delgado and Momo Diaby due to medium to long-term injuries, although striker Michael Smith might return after suffering a knock on the day of the Millwall game. Callum Paterson, a utility player, will be suspended and will be unable to play.
