Sunderland have been handed injury list with double selection boost ahead of the visit of Huddersfield Town.

Sunderland have received a double selection boost ahead of the visit of Huddersfield Town. Chris Rigg, a midfielder, and Mason Burstow, a forward, are both in contention to return to the matchday squad.

Rigg has returned to training after representing England’s Under-17s in the World Cup, while Chelsea loanee Burstow has recovered from a minor knock that kept him out of Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle. “Mason has been back training, but only for a couple of days this week,” first-team coach Mark Venus said. I expect him to be on the team.

“Chris has returned from the World with England.” He’s fine; he’s been training today. He’s been away, playing some games in a high-pressure environment with England in the hopes of winning a World Cup

“He’s been under a lot of pressure.” He’s an amazing kid with a great attitude who trains every day like he plays and is a part of the future. We need to shape him and bring him through.

“Chris is back in the swing of club football now.” Playing for England is a fantastic experience for him, and he hopes to progress through all age groups. That would be fantastic for him, us, and the community. “We’re very pleased with Chris.”

The Black Cats, who are just outside the Championship play-offs, will be without Aji Alese, Jay Matete, Corry Evans, and Timothée Pembele due to long-term injuries. The Wearside club is hoping that head coach Tony Mowbray will be in the home dugout when they face Town this evening. Mowbray was unable to attend his pre-match press conference due to illness, so Venus stepped in.

“He’s got a chest infection but I think he’ll be there, we obviously need him,” Venus said. “We know how he wants to work and what he wants, so it hasn’t impacted us too much in terms of build up and preparation.” If he isn’t there, it won’t be for lack of trying but we’re hopeful.”
