Roberto De Zerbi made it clear to TNT Sports’ Joe Cole why he has a different philosophy to other Italian managers such as Claudio Ranieri and Carlo Ancelotti.

Roberto De Zerbi discussed to Joe Cole of TNT Sports why he has a different philosophy than other Italian managers like Claudio Ranieri and Carlo Ancelotti. The Brighton manager is noted for his adventurous style of play, which contrasts with the generally more conservative Italian style of play. De Zerbi attributed the disparity to his playing time.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi discussed what distinguishes him from his Italian contemporaries Claudio Ranieri and Carlo Ancelotti in an exclusive conversation with TNT Sports.
De Zerbi, who has led Brighton since September 2022, is well-known for urging his teams to play high-risk, offensive football.

This contrasts with the traditionally more cautious style of football favoured by a number of Italian coaches.

De Zerbi highlighted his differences with Joe Cole ahead of The Seagulls’ UEFA Europa League trip to AEK Athens on Thursday, which will be shown live on TNT Sports and Discovery+.
“I think my style, my idea, started from my history as a player,” De Zerbi explained to TNT Sports’ Cole.
“I was a number 10, Ancelotti was a midfielder, Ranieri was a defender.” As a result, my notion is more aggressive than the typical Italian idea.”

Brighton were sixth in the Premier League last season under De Zerbi’s management, but they are now eighth with only one win in the competition since September.
In the UEFA Europa League, they are second in Group B with two victories, one tie, and one loss.
Brighton are also surrendering more goals in the Premier League this season than last, and were blasted 6-1 by Aston Villa in September.
De Zerbi described why he thought this was happening, citing Alexis MacAllister’s departure to Liverpool as one of the main reasons.

We were playing with four attackers last season, but Mac Allister often played like a number 10,” he said. “So we had more control of the game.
“Now we are playing with four attackers – Joao Pedro, Ansu Fati, Evan Ferguson, Danny Welbeck. They are not number 10s. When they receive the ball, they want to go to score.”
Pascal Gross has been one of the standout players of Brighton’s campaign so far, with De Zerbi singing his praises.
“Pascal is one of the best players I have worked with,” he said. “People are now starting to know his quality, but for me it’s not a surprise.”
“He can already play in the Champions League, in the first eleven of Germany. He is at the right level to fight for another level at Brighton.”
