Pundit Gary Neville said Cristian Romero’s tackle on Callum Wilson deemed ‘crazy’ and it was a red card offense

According to Gary Neville, Tottenham defender Cristian Romero was fortunate to stay on the field as his team defeated Newcastle.

With Spurs leading the Magpies by four goals as the final ten minutes began on Sunday, the Argentine launched into a rash challenge on Callum Wilson, earning him a yellow card.

Despite Wilson being left in a heap by Romero, who escaped a booking for a late challenge on Miguel Almiron in the first half, VAR confirmed referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision.

Romero’s escape from what would have been his second red card of the season astounded Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville.

During the commentary, the former Manchester United defender said, “Absolutely insane.”

“Honestly, at first glance, I think it’s a red card.” He’s insane, Romero.

“As I said in the first half, he has to tackle all the time… jockeying, slowing himself down doesn’t occur to him.”

“I’m sorry, that’s a red. I have little sympathy for him because he does it so frequently.

“[Wilson] is on the ground, defenseless. [Romero] has just jumped over the ball and landed on his ankle.”

Tottenham won a crucial game against Newcastle in north London, with Richarlison scoring twice after Destiny Udogie’s first goal for the club.

Heung-min Son scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-1, and Joelinton added a late consolation to make it 4-1.
