Injury could have curtailed the loan spell of one of Sheffield Wednesday’s players ahead of a key period of the season.

Midfielder John Buckley had surgery on Thursday for a shoulder injury suffered in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers.

Buckley came on as a substitute for the eighth time during his loan spell with the Owls, but was forced to exit the game early due to a collision with Sam Field.

Blackburn Rovers, the 24-year-old’s parent club, have the option to recall him from his season-long loan in January.

He’ll be out for a few weeks,” said Rohl, whose team kicks off their demanding Christmas calendar with a home game against Cardiff City on Saturday.

“He had surgery today.” I texted him yesterday evening to wish him luck with the surgery.

“I used to have the same shoulder problem when I was younger.

“I believe if we do everything right he will be back very soon.”

However, Rohl refused to speculate on what the injury meant for Buckley’s future with the Owls.

“At first it’s important the operation will work, then we will speak to see what is best for the recovery,” the German was quoted as saying.

Callum Paterson and Bambo Diaby, who both departed Wednesday’s game against QPR with the score at 1-0, have returned to training.

“Callum Paterson is fine,” Rohl added. “I was very happy when we got the scan results.”

“He’s a guy who can run, fight, and press extremely well.” I’m thrilled to have a player like him on my team. And Bambo has returned to training; he’s a warrior.

“It’s good to have a lot of players available at this time of year with so many games and the need to have fresh legs.”

Strikers Josh Windass and Michael Smith are still ‘day-to-day,’ but should play some part over the holidays.
