Geno Smith is set to return at quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks this week.

RENTON, Washington — The Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback, Geno Smith, is expected to return this week.

No one knows when or if Jamal Adams will return for the Seahawks this season.

Smith was a full participant in Seattle’s practice on Wednesday, the first step toward likely returning to the starting lineup this Sunday against Tennessee after missing the previous two games due to a groin injury.

Smith was on the verge of starting against Philadelphia on Monday night, but the Seahawks decided to keep him out for one more game in the hopes that he’ll be fully healthy for the final three weeks.

The move appeared to benefit Seattle, as backup Drew Lock led the Seahawks to a late touchdown and a 20-17 win over the Eagles, snapping a four-game losing streak and putting them in the thick of the NFC playoff race.

But it’s back to Smith’s job if he makes it through the week unscathed.

“He’s got to go through today, see how he’s doing tomorrow, and just do it like any other guy who’s coming back,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday. “But we’re really encouraged that he’s going to be all right, and we won’t overtax him during the week either.”

Smith was excellent in Seattle’s most recent start, throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns with one rushing touchdown in a 41-35 loss to Dallas on Nov. 30.

While Smith appears to be on his way back, the situation with Adams remains murky and uncertain. Carroll said on his radio show on Tuesday that Adams didn’t play against the Eagles due to lingering pain and discomfort in his knee from a torn quadriceps tendon suffered at the start of the 2022 season.

Carroll was more pessimistic about Adams’ status for this week a day later.

“He’s still recovering.” Carroll stated, “He’s been in recovery mode for months.” “He just continues to do everything he can possibly do to try to get right and get back.”

When asked if there had been any discussions about possibly shutting down Adams for the season, Carroll said yes.

“We kind of don’t talk about that, but it’s been something that we have acknowledged and that’s a decision,” Carroll told reporters. “So far, he’s wanted to keep going and driving and see what he can make of it.”

Adams returned from a major leg injury in Week 4 and appeared in six consecutive games before missing the Week 11 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He played nearly every snap in a pair of losses to San Francisco and a loss at Dallas over the next three weeks before missing the win over Dallas.

Another major injury concern for Seattle is rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who could miss his second game in a row this week. Witherspoon suffered a hip pointer early in the Eagles’ Week 14 loss at San Francisco and did not play.

“He’s moving around better just getting around the building, but we don’t know what’s going to happen during the week with him, so we’ll just have to take it one day at a time,” Carroll told reporters.
