Sheffield Wednesday need to find their shooting boots. And fast.

That was one of Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl’s summaries after his team lost 2-0 to Coventry City in midweek. The Owls were able to grow into the game in a far more even second half after a first half that saw Coventry City take the lead – partly due to Wednesday’s plan of sitting deep to hit on the counter, according to the German – but were undone by two good finishes by Japanese international Tatsuhiro Sakamoto.

Wednesday had chances to equalize in the second half but were unable to capitalize, leaving Owls fans bemoaning a similar tale of near-misses and gaffes at the other end of the field.

In terms of goals scored versus the quality of opportunities generated, Wednesday’s ‘xG v actual goals’ of -0.19 places them third in the division, with only QPR (-0.21) and Sunderland (-0.39) having a greater disparity. In terms of ‘anticipated points’ based on the quality of opportunities produced and conceded, Wyscout is on 27.9 points as of Wednesday, about four wins more than their current tally of 16.

Röhl told BBC Sheffield after the Coventry defeat: “When you look at the 2-0 for the opponent, they have great movement, well-organized shooting.” This is the standard in this circumstance. We had three chances to complete the activity and we were unable to do so.

Perhaps we are not always calm enough. We are aware of this, and it is motivated by a desire to create more and more and more. To be successful in this competition, we must seize any opportunity that comes our way. That’s football.”
