Las Vegas Raiders head coach job a ‘two-horse race’ between Jim Harbaugh and Antonio Pierce

The Las Vegas Raiders have narrowed their early head coaching search to only two candidates, according to rumors. The Raiders finished their 2023 season with a 27-14 triumph over the Denver Broncos.

According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, owner Mark Davis is contemplating interim head coach Antonio Pierce and current University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh to lead his squad on the field in 2024 and beyond.

It’s an intriguing issue for Davis, who watched Pierce take over a disgruntled Raiders locker room after Josh McDaniels was fired and end the season at 5-4. Harbaugh, for example, is still at Michigan and will be coaching in the college football national championship game on Monday.

With Harbaugh, Schultz stated that he has conveyed his desire to return to the NFL to those close to him. Harbaugh was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the San Francisco 49ers from 6-10 in 2010 to the NFC Championship game in his first season. Harbaugh was the only coach in NFL history to lead a team to the NFL Championship Game in each of his first three seasons.

According to Schultz, the Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, and Washington Commanders have all expressed interest in Harbaugh.

This reflects his stature in NFL circles and emphasizes the beneficial impact he could have on a franchise like the Raiders. His tremendous NFL track record speaks for itself. Harbaugh is also regarded as the best coaching contender for swiftly improving whatever scenario he enters. During his tenure, he has a track record of turning around both collegiate teams and the 49ers.

Schultz also stated that most observers have already agreed that Pierce has done an excellent job since taking over in a difficult position. He’s established a great culture and environment, which has resulted in increased success. Raiders veterans such as Maxx Crosby and Davante Adams have publicly backed their current coach and indicated their desire for him to keep the position.

That’s holding a lot of weight with Davis, as Schultz reported he’s the only other candidate under consideration.

Pierce’s strong chemistry with the club and ability to motivate the players are critical to his campaign. The respect and trust he has acquired from the locker room and great players implies he has earned the right to lead. This internal support may be advantageous during the hiring process.
