The Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Arthur Smith

After missing the playoffs and failing to finish with a winning record for the third straight season, the Atlanta Falcons sacked head coach Arthur Smith. Smith, who was hired as an offensive-minded coach, underperformed during his three seasons with the Falcons, finishing with a 21-30 record.

“Decisions like this are never easy, and they never feel good,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said of Smith’s firing. “We have a great deal of respect for Coach Smith and appreciate all of his hard work and dedication to the Falcons over the last three years.” He has contributed to the development of a positive culture inside our football team, but the results on the field have fallen short of our expectations.” Blank and CEO Rich McKay will immediately begin the search for a new head coach.

Atlanta finished the season with a 7-10 record after falling to the New Orleans Saints 48-17. Despite entering the game with a slim chance of claiming the NFC South, they were unable to overcome a 31-0 halftime deficit.
