Bristol Rovers must avoid controversial Bristol City transfer move

The 35-year-old striker joined Rovers in September and has been a revelation in League One, scoring eight goals in 16 league appearances, making him the club’s highest goalscorer this season.

The seasoned striker, who has 17 Scotland matches, joined the Memorial Stadium club on a free transfer after being released by QPR at the conclusion of last season and has made an impression in the third division.

Despite only departing Loftus Road last season, the Hoops are thought to be monitoring the striker this month, suggesting a return to one of the veteran’s old clubs could be on the cards.

Chris Martin joining Bristol City would be an unusual acquisition for a variety of reasons, not least of which is his age.

A short-term deal for Martin, 35, smacks of desperation, and Bristol City should be looking for a long-term alternative that fits Liam Manning’s style of play rather than the Scottish international, who will surely join the club only until the end of the season.

If you were a Bristol City player as recently as January 2023, you could understand fans’ outrage if the club re-signed a player they let go less than a year earlier.

The 35-year-old appeared in 95 games for the Robins, scoring 17 goals and assisting on 11 others. It was a successful stint, and Martin was a competent Championship striker, but considering his age, there may be more acceptable striker choices available.

There’s no doubt that Martin has performed admirably in League One this season, and if he were younger, it’s easy to see why Championship clubs were interested in him. However, it appears that the striker has had his time in the top flight and should instead enjoy being a big fish in a smaller pond as his career winds down.

While some Bristol City fans may want to recruit Martin to pull one over on their main rivals, they must recognize that signing Martin at this juncture of his career would be foolish.
