PLYMOUTH ARGYLE PUNISHED FOR STRONG CHAMPIONSHIP RETURN

The Pilgrims’ primary goal this season will have been to stay up, and they are on track to accomplish it with seven points separating them from the relegation zone.

Plymouth have been a breath of fresh air this season, thanks to in-form forward Morgan Whittaker, but the Championship is unforgiving and they have been punished for their excellent start.

Following the departure of head coach Steven Schumacher to Stoke City, loan players Luke Cundle and Finn Azaz have been moved on.

Cundle has rejoined Schumacher for a loan term at Stoke, while old teammate Azaz has joined Middlesbrough on a permanent basis for roughly £2.5 million.

A major setback for Plymouth, and both transactions show that Championship big spenders will always take advantage of the league’s underdogs when given the opportunity.

On paper, admired coach Ian Foster is a great replacement for Schumacher for the Pilgrims, and with the sellable assets at their disposal, they are well-placed to stay in the Championship (with superb loan additions Darko Gyabi and Ashley Phillips) and kick on with an increased budget next season.
