Sheffield Wednesday look set to miss out on this one transfer target who seems poised to move to League One Charlton Athletic.

So far in the January transfer window, Sheffield Wednesday have been active.

Danny Rohl has brought in two new players, goalkeeper James Beadle on loan from Brighton and forward Ike Ugbo from Troyes.

Conor Coventry has also been connected; the West Ham midfielder appeared likely to depart the Hammers this month, and the Owls were interested in a permanent transfer for the 23-year-old.

Coventry, on the other hand, is likely to join Charlton Athletic.

Charlton Athletic are likely to unveil Conor Coventry, according to Richard Cawley.

Last night, South London Press journalist Richard Cawley stated on X that Coventry is’set to be announced’ as a Charlton Athletic player this morning, adding that Coventry’s representation ‘withdrew from talks with Sheffield Wednesday’ yesterday afternoon.

Danny Rohl will not dwell on the Coventry defeat.

Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday appeared to be interested in Coventry.

He’s still young and has a lot of promise, so he might be someone Rohl molds into the player he wants to boost a midfield that has already lost John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson this month.

Given Cawley’s post on X, it appears that Coventry has chosen to transfer to Charlton; the Addicks are now 13th in League One and have won only one of their previous 11 games in all competitions.

It might be a monetary consideration, with Wednesday unlikely to pay big wages at the moment given their evident financial troubles, or it could be a geography factor, given Coventry’s long association with West Ham.

In any case, it’s a setback for Sheffield Wednesday, but Rohl isn’t going to linger on it.

He and Head of Recruitment Kevin Beadell will have additional targets in mind, and they’ll almost certainly be working hard to get those players into Hillsborough before the end of the month, as the window closes.

Overall, the transfer market appears to be intriguing, yet Sheffield Wednesday’s main goal this season remains Championship survival.

The Owls travel to Southampton next; the Saints are presently third in the Championship and have not lost in 19 games in all competitions.

Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday opened the 2023/24 Championship season with a 2-1 victory in South Yorkshire.
