Sheffield Wednesday are keen on signing a highly-rated young striker from one of the Premier League’s big boys

The Owls have had a busy start to the window, bringing two in and two out so far. Manager Danny Röhl has made no secret of his desire to do more work and bring aspects of the team closer to his ideals, with the forward line being one area he’d like to improve after the signing of Ike Ugbo last week.

The Star knows that 20-year-old Arsenal forward Mika Biereth is one player the club is interested in bringing to Hillsborough for the second half of the season. Biereth, rated as one of the ‘ones to watch’ at The Emirates, is on loan at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, where he has scored 11 goals (5G/6A) in 14 league outings despite a knee injury. This weekend, the Steelmen will face Alloa Athletic in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

As with their previous two January additions – Ugbo was on loan from Troyes at Cardiff City and Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper James Beadle was with Oxford United – Wednesday would necessitate the termination of Biereth’s loan deal at Fir Park, as well as Arsenal deciding Wednesday is the best possible stage for the development of the Denmark under-21 youngster amidst rival interest from elsewhere in the Championship.

Biereth, a skillful number nine whose playing style has been described as ‘direct and goal-minded’ by The Star, recently trained with the Arsenal first team during Scottish football’s winter break. Though he has yet to make his official Arsenal debut, he has made many appearances off the bench and spent last season on loan with RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch top flight.

Biereth, born in London to a Danish-German father and a Bosnian mother, progressed through Fulham’s development system, earning national acclaim on his route to an under-18s career of 40 goals (25G/15A) in 37 appearances for the Craven Cottage youngsters. Arsenal saw enough in him to lure him away from their London rivals in July 2021, when he signed a professional contract. He has 12 goals and five assists in 26 games for Arsenal’s under-23 squad.
