Danny Rohl has offered his verdict on the competition for Sheffield Wednesday’s No.1 spot in between the sticks.

Cameron Dawson has been with Sheffield Wednesday since he was 15, and he had a breakout season for the Owls in 2018-19.

The goalie eventually lost his place in the club and was loaned out to Exeter City.

Dawson then started last season as David Stockdale’s understudy, but secured a regular spot in net moving into 2023.

Despite helping Sheffield Wednesday secure promotion by keeping 13 clean sheets in only 22 League One games, Devis Vasquez’s arrival this summer knocked him out of the frame once more.

Xisco Munoz liked the Colombian, and Dawson’s future at his hometown club appeared to be in jeopardy, but he was given another chance when Danny Rohl joined the team.

The 28-year-old has subsequently returned to the starting lineup, and his form appears to be forcing Vasquez’s early departure from Hillsborough.

Dawson has received plaudits for his recent efforts, but he will undoubtedly have a sense of déjà vu following James Beadle’s loan move from Brighton.

Dawson kept his spot in the team for the 5-0 loss against Southampton, but Danny Rohl has stated that he is not assured to start over Beadle.

Speaking to The Star, the German stated, “Cameron demonstrated in the recent games that he was prepared and performed well.

“I told my guys that it’s all about performance in both training and games. As a manager, I am responsible for deciding on each game view. These are the reasons he played for Southampton, and we’ll see how things go with the position this week.”

Cameron Dawson stood up during Sheffield Wednesday’s FA Cup victory over Cardiff City, as he saved two penalties.

His current form keeps him in the top rank, but he will be aware that James Beadle has not joined the Championship club to warm the bench.

Brighton would only loan out a promising kid if he was guaranteed minutes, so Dawson should not become overconfident in goal.

Given that Devis Vasquez plainly did not appeal to Danny Rohl, Dawson will benefit from having some robust competition now. Hopefully, it will increase his performance even further.
