The Flyers signed the 24 year old to an eight-year $49.6 million contract extension Friday.

The Flyers inked Owen Tippett to an eight-year, $49.6 million contract deal on Friday.

The transaction has an average annual value of $6.2 million.

Tippett, who turns 25 next month, was due to be a restricted free agent this summer. He is now bound to a two-year, $3 million contract with the Flyers, which he received around four months after being acquired in the Claude Giroux trade.

The tool-laden power forward has thrived with the Flyers. He’s second on the club with 18 goals this season after setting career highs in games (77), goals (27) and points (49) last year.

“You saw it last year, the way he uses his speed, especially from our own zone, I think he creates so much offense for us,” Scott Laughton stated a few weeks ago. “He’s been pretty good. He generates a lot of offense out of nothing, which has been entertaining to watch. He has a big body, skates well, and is very physical. It will be wonderful to see what he becomes, but he is still discovering his individuality.

Tippett was on a hot streak until suffering a lower-body injury last Saturday. He’s scored six goals and eight points in his last seven games, including two highlight-reel goals that captivated spectators and teammates.
“He has a chance to be something special,” head coach John Tortorella said last week.

Tippett is deemed day-to-day due to his injury. Following Saturday’s game against the Bruins, the Flyers will go nine days without playing. The lengthy vacation is timely for Tippett (and the Flyers).

Tippett, according to the club, still needs to improve in order to become a complete player. But he’s a quiet, coachable guy, and the Flyers like his scoring potential.

“He’s kind of all over the place away from the puck,” Tortorella explained. “I try to strike a balance between teaching him that aspect of the game and not getting in his way offensively because he is so dangerous.

“So we’re basically spoon-feeding him some stuff away from the puck since he’s on both ledgers. Hopefully, we’re attempting to get some of that off this ledger, and maybe it will add to it. I have no notion where the limit is. He might be an excellent player.”
