The Detroit Lions Announce Weird Quarterback Injury Prior To NFC Championship Matchup Against The San Francisco 49ers

The Detroit Lions may finally have a fully healthy Sam LaPorta, as the rookie tight end recovers from his persistent knee issue at precisely the perfect time.

LaPorta injured his knee in the season finale and played hurt during the first two playoff wins, but he was able to return to full practice on January 26 and will participate in Sunday’s NFC Championship game with no injury designation.

LaPorta was a key component of the team’s passing assault this season, setting franchise records for his position and sparking a youth movement alongside running back Jahmyr Gibbs. It may be critical for the Lions to get their breakout star back to full strength as they attempt to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

Lions Getting Healthy on Offense

When LaPorta hyperextended his knee in the season finale against the Minnesota Vikings on January 7, the outlook appeared bleak, but he was able to return for the wild-card round game. LaPorta has maintained his position in the offense, catching 12 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in two postseason victories.

LaPorta had been limited in practice earlier this week, but he returned fully on Friday and was cleared to participate in the team’s January 28 game against the San Francisco 49ers, with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

On Friday, the Lions received more positive news, as center Frank Ragnow returned to practice fully and with no injury designation.

The team did add some depth this week, adding veteran tight end Zach Ertz to the practice squad. The veteran expressed his excitement to join head coach Dan Campbell’s team.

“I love Dan,” Ertz told the media. “We had a 20-minute talk yesterday, and I’m excited to see him in front of the squad because he’s someone I’ve always respected.

“He’s a guy that always gets his tight ends playing the right way. So I’m excited to be around him.”

Lions Found Breakout Star in Sam LaPorta

The Lions received significant criticism for using a second-round pick on LaPorta, especially considering the team’s extensive secondary needs and the first-round pick they used on another skill player, running back Gibbs.

LaPorta set a franchise record for tight ends with 86 receptions, while also setting an NFL record for all rookie tight ends. He scored 10 touchdowns and 889 receiving yards, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

Campbell has also commended LaPorta’s flexibility, stating he can do much more than catch passes.

“He’s really just taken off in the things that he’s able to do,” Campbell told The Athletic. “What he brings to the table, his blitz ability, his coverage ability, the fits in the run game, all of that.”

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson also praised LaPorta, saying he is talented above his years.

“I tell you, man, the kid just continues to impress,” Johnson remarked. “One way or another. This is what he does on the field. I mean, it’s amazing for a rookie. He truly is.
