One Sheffield Wednesday star could now see his contract cancelled in a bid to get him off the books before 11pm tomorrow night.

The January transfer window closes at 11 p.m. on Thursday night, and Sheffield Wednesday will see the conclusion of a difficult window.

Danny Rohl’s first season as a manager, as well as his first at Sheffield Wednesday, may not be noteworthy, with only two additions to his name so far.

There have been several links to players, but many have chosen to transfer elsewhere, underlining a major issue for Rohl in attracting players to Hillsborough.

However, Wednesday is still in the process of completing a deal for striker Duncan McGuire. In addition, the team may sell some players in order to bring in new players.

George Byers’ contract with Sheffield Wednesday could be revoked.
George Byers is one of the players expected to leave tomorrow.

The midfield favourite has not appeared in any of the last five games, and reports this week suggest that he is eligible to leave the club before the window closes.

The Star has recently reported more information on the subject, claiming that Byers is interested in the Championship, League One, and perhaps Germany, and that a loan exit is also possible.

More interestingly, the same report adds that a permanent exit for Byers would require Sheffield Wednesday and the purchasing club to reach an agreement in which Byers’ current contract is terminated, since clubs would be hesitant to invest on a player who will be out of contract in six months.

Blackpool and Barnsley are among the clubs reportedly interested in signing the 27-year-old Byers.

Poor planning equals poor outcomes.
Having to let Byers go now for nothing seems like an odd outcome.

If Wednesday isn’t going to claim him right now, it makes more sense to keep him as a backup for the rest of the season.

However, this is the product of the club’s bad planning.

Sheffield Wednesday have been permitted to reach the point where a number of key first-team players will be out of contract in the same summer.

Regardless of whether or not this season ends in survival, Rohl and co. will have a massive rebuilding work on their hands this summer, with the Sheffield Wednesday first-team currently lacking in quality.

Byers might not be the only one who departs in the next 48 hours. However, Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday fans will be hoping for at least a handful of fresh signings.
