Philadelphia Eagles coach dies shortly after leaving the house and this one is surprising

Roy Istvan, Jeff Stoutland’s long-time top assistant, has departed the Eagles for the same job on Kevin Stefanski’s Browns staff, which is somewhat shocking.

The Browns announced on their website Thursday morning that Istvan, the Eagles’ assistant offensive line coach since 2019, has been appointed as the assistant offensive line coach under new Browns offensive line coach Andy Dickerson. Dickerson replaced Bill Callahan, the Eagles’ offensive line coach under Ray Rhodes, who is now the o-line coach for his son Brian, the Titans’ new head coach.

Istvan’s connection to Stoutland dates back over 30 years. Istvan played for Stoutland and then coached alongside Stout at Southern Connecticut State in the late 1980s. He joined the Eagles in 2019, following nearly three decades of college coaching.

Stoutland uploaded a video on social media last week implying that he will return to Nick Sirianni’s staff, and he is currently the only 2023 Eagles assistant coach that has been confirmed to return under new coordinators Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.

Istvan will see many familiar faces in Cleveland.

Stefanski hired Duce Staley as running backs coach earlier this month, and Istvan and Staley previously worked together for the Eagles in 2019 and 2020 under Doug Pederson. Jim Schwartz, the Browns defensive coordinator, was also here with Istvan. In 2019, Browns general manager Andrew Berry served as the Eagles’ vice president of football operations.

Istvan is the eighth assistant coach on Nick Sirianni’s 2023 staff who is no longer with the squad.

Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson is now Commanders passing game coordinator; defensive coordinators Sean Desai and Matt Patricia have left but haven’t been hired elsewhere; quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney is Colts passing game coordinator under Shane Steichen; senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady is Chargers passing game coordinator; Tracy Rocker is defensive line coach under Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, the former Eagles secondary coach, and second

Running backs coach Jemel Singleton, receivers coach Aaron Moorehead, tight ends coach Jason Michael, linebackers coach D.J. Eliot, edge coach Jeremiah Washburn, and a handful of assistant position coaches and quality control coaches are among others whose fate is unknown.

In Istvan’s five years at Stoutland, the Eagles had four offensive lineman make 11 Pro Bowls: Jason Kelce five, Lane Johnson three, Landon Dickerson two, and Brandon Brooks one.
