‘Brilliant’ Sheffield Wednesday man praised after huge win over Bristol City

Sheffield Wednesday defeated Bristol City 2-1 in the Championship today, with one player taking the spotlight for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday hosted Bristol City at Hillsborough for another cup final in the Owls’ fight for Championship survival this season.

Before today, Danny Rohl’s side had won two of their previous three games, including a 2-0 victory over Millwall at The Den.

And after a relatively quiet first 15 minutes, Sheffield Wednesday took the lead thanks to a quick move and finish from Ike Ugbo.

Bristol City equalized shortly after, with Jason Knight heading home from a corner, but Ugbo then flicked home a Marvin Johnson shot to put the Owls ahead at halftime.

The second half was far more somber and cagey. Neither side really laid a finger on the other, with Sheffield Wednesday appearing content to play out the game and pick up another huge three points.

‘Brilliant’ Ike Ugbo celebrated after Bristol City’s victory.
Ugbo arrived on loan from Troyes in the January transfer window and has five goals in seven Championship appearances for the Owls, all of which have come in his past four games.

The Canadian international is receiving high plaudits from Wednesday fans as he leads the club to Championship safety, and his performance today drew the attention of BBC correspondent Rob Staton.

Ugbo finds scoring touch under Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday.
Ugbo’s career has seen him play on loan for several clubs in England and Europe, with variable results.

And, despite only scoring four goals in the Championship in the first half of the season with Cardiff City, the 25-year-old has already surpassed that total under Rohl.

Rohl uses Ugbo as a loan striker, and with Liam Palmer, Pol Valentin, and Johnson regularly delivering crosses into the box, Ugbo has plenty to feed on.

He demonstrated today, particularly with his second goal, that he is a true poacher-type attacker; he simply let Johnson’s shot go over his head and past Max O’Leary in the Bristol City goal.

And, in the midst of this scoring streak, it appears that Ugbo is finally turning a corner in his career, while still enjoying his time with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have been without a No.9 all season, but they suddenly have a prolific one in Ugbo, who could be Sheffield Wednesday’s rescue in the Championship.

With today’s triumph, the Owls are now in 23rd place, three points from safety.
