Cleveland Browns could get a second chance at the 31 year old potential cap casualty

Could the Cleveland Browns seek DeAndre Hopkins again in 2024? Hopkins and the Browns were linked in 2023 because of the wide receiver’s familiarity with Deshaun Watson. The two played together with the Houston Texans and produced some outstanding numbers.

Cleveland’s quarterback made it clear he desired a reunion, but it never occurred. Instead, the Browns began the season with Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, and Elijah Moore, with Hopkins signing with the Tennessee Titans. Hopkins totaled 75 receptions for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns while at Tennessee. Even with strong stats, his future with the organization is uncertain following a coaching change.

Brian Callahan succeeded Mike Vrabel as head coach, and Nick Holz took over as offensive coordinator, succeeding Todd Downing. These adjustments have fueled conjecture that Hopkins might become a cap casualty this offseason. The primary reason would be cost savings, with the Titans projected to save more than $16 million with less than $2 million in dead money if he is categorized as a post-June 1 cut.

Browns receivers struggling in 2023 might result in a lengthier look at DeAndre Hopkins.

It became clear that Cleveland had no intention of going after Hopkins full force. Maybe if his pay commands had fallen through the floor. However, they were confident in their team in 2023 and chose not to engage in a bidding war.

The question today is whether they would change their tune if given the opportunity to mulligan. Aside from Cooper, Cleveland’s receivers fell below expectations. Cooper had 1,215 yards, while Elijah Moore had 640 and only two touchdowns. Peoples-Jones barely made a sound before being dealt to Detroit.

Rookie Cedric Tillman showed promise, but finished with only 224 yards on 21 receptions without a touchdown. David Bell had 167 yards and three touchdowns on 14 receptions, but he was helped by a strong performance in Week 18 when all of the starters were rested.

Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry continues to say he is confident in his players, but the Browns must weigh carefully before making a move at the position. Perhaps that means giving Hopkins a lengthier look if he becomes available again.
