2024 NFL combine: Lions finally achieve stability at linebacker

Incredibly low. When was the last time we could say this about Detroit’s linebackers? This has been a long-standing issue for the organization, but years of successful investment have stabilized the situation.

Alex Anzalone, one of the new regime’s initial additions, is coming off back-to-back stellar seasons in Detroit, has emerged as one of the defense’s heartbeats, and is under contract for two more years. Jack Campbell, the 18th overall pick in last year’s draft, recorded 95 tackles, ranking second among all rookies, and was named to the NFL all-rookie team. Even Derrick Barnes stepped up last season, intercepting the ball that propelled the Lions to the NFC Championship Game.

The Lions do not have an elite linebacker situation, and there is always room for improvement in free agency and, particularly, the draft. However, for the first time in a long time, they have linebacker consistency. Campbell is the unit’s future, while Anzalone is a capable veteran who complements him, and Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez provide depth.

If Detroit were to add to the roster, it would most likely be late in the draft or at the bottom of free agency. But just for fun, here’s a look at some linebacker prospects.
