One of Jeff Hafley’s top assistant coaches in Chestnut Hill is joining his old boss in Green Bay.

The majority of the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coaching staff is in place, but head coach Matt LaFleur and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley are still adding some pieces on the fringes. On Monday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reported that the Packers are adding Sean Duggan as a defensive coordinator, bringing one of Hafley’s previous top assistants from Boston College to Green Bay.

Duggan has been with Hafley for five years, most recently as linebackers coach at Boston College, and he has been named co-defensive coordinator for the 2023 season. He joined Hafley at BC after serving as his graduate assistant coach at Ohio State University in 2019.

Duggan, on the other hand, was no stranger to the transfer from Ohio to Boston College in 2020. Duggan grew raised in the Cincinnati region before committing to Boston College, where he played linebacker from 2011 to 2014. He appeared in 45 career games, starting seven, and served as team captain as a senior.

Given his expertise as a player and a coach, Duggan should be a good fit for coaching linebackers, and his role will most likely be as an assistant to new Packers linebackers coach Anthony Campanile. In that situation, he would be able to rejoin with Isaiah McDuffie, who made over 100 tackles for the Eagles in 2020.

The Packers have yet to formally reveal their whole coaching staff, and will most likely do so once everything is finalized. The team’s official website currently includes only four defensive coaches: Hafley, who has been formally hired, and three returning coaches from last year’s staff: DBs coach Ryan Downard, DL coach/pass rush specialist Jason Rebrovich, and defensive QC coach Wendel Davis.
