Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Barry propose a new trade deadline for the upcoming NFL season.

Mary Kay Cabot stated on Tuesday at the NFL Combine that the Cleveland Browns’ general manager will propose a new rule modification surrounding the trading deadline.
Andrew believes that the NFL should retroactively fix the trade deadline date after adding a regular season game. He goes on to say that proactively, if the NFL wants to add an 18th game, the rules should be changed to allow for a wider trade window.

Logic over Tradition

Overall, Andrew Barry makes sense. The trading deadline has remained unchanged as the number of games has increased. The logical approach would be to increase the trade deadline by one week if the season extends.

The percentage of seasons used by other major sports in comparison to the NFL is another telling statistic. The trade deadlines for the MLB and NBA fall on 65% of the calendar days of the season. The NHL is 78% of the way through the season and approaching a trading deadline.

The National Football League’s trading deadline is now set at 45 percent.

Proposal to the NFL

Andrew Barry concludes that his idea is 55% of the way through the calendar. If a typical regular season lasts 122 days (the 2024 season runs from September 5th to January 5th), 55% of it equals 67 days. That would put us after week ten of the NFL calender.
According to Andrew Barry’s rule proposal, the suggested trade deadline for the 2024 season is November 5th or 6th.
