Detroit Lions sign the 29 year old linebacker to two-year extension

Jalen Reeves-Maybin has decided to stay in Detroit, and his next contract will be historic. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Reeves-Maybin has agreed to a two-year contract deal with the Lions. The veteran was scheduled to enter free agency in a few weeks.

The contract is for $7.5 million, with a maximum of $8 million. The deal includes $5.245 million in guaranteed money, as well as a $2.5 million signing bonus. Reeves-Maybin is the “highest-paid core special-teamer ever,” according to Garafolo.

The Tennessee native was selected by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. He spent his first four seasons in the NFL as a backup linebacker and special teamer, but he earned a starting spot in 2021. Reeves-Maybin started 11 of 15 games that season, finishing with 82 tackles and two forced fumbles.

He earned a two-year contract with the Texans based on his performance, but he spent most of his time on special teams. After being released by Houston last summer, he returned to Detroit on a one-year contract. He eventually developed into a special teams ace, ending the season with 20 tackles and a few standout plays. The 29-year-old was named second-team All-Pro in recognition of his accomplishments.
