New Seattle Seahawks head coach opens up on ‘tough’ quarterback decisions

Mike Macdonald has been asked about how Gino Smith and Drew Lock fit into his plans.
A new era has begun in Seattle, following Pete Carroll’s 14-year reign as Seahawks head coach, which ended at the end of the season.

This season, former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator coach Mike Macdonald will replace the 72-year-old, becoming the NFL’s youngest head coach at the age of 36.

But, in addition to a fresh face on the sidelines, could there be a change under center at Lumen Field?

Gino Smith has been the Seahawks’ main quarterback for the past two seasons, earning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year title in 2022. Last season, Drew Lock filled in for Smith and had a spectacular performance in a Week 15 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

When asked if both quarterbacks will be participating in the future, Macdonald responded that decisions at the quarterback position had yet to be made.

“That’s a tough question, and it’s one that I probably can’t answer right now,” Macdonald told KCPQ.

“We’re doing a lot of work on those individuals, and I’ve had discussions with them simply to get to know them and understand who they are as people, as well as their past, objectives, family dynamics, and place of origin. I knew nothing about their involvement in this situation.

“Right now, we are figuring out who they are. Obviously, one, two, or both would fit into our future plans, but we probably don’t have an answer for you right now.”

The Seahawks were 9-8 last season, finishing third in the NFC West. Smith’s decent but unspectacular season saw him fail to match his 2022 form, and he just modified his deal, indicating he would likely stay in Seattle, whereas Lock will become a free agent next month.
