Sunderland captain has suffered a further injury setback it has been revealed

Sunderland skipper Corry Evans has experienced another injury setback, it has been confirmed.

Evans, 33, has been out for more than a year after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in early 2023.

The Northern Irishman was recently photographed in first-team training as he continues his recuperation, with the midfielder set to appear in some U21s games.

However, Mike Dodds has disclosed that Evans has had a little setback on his road to rehabilitation.

Corry Evans ‘rolls’ ankle, but ‘nothing severe’, says Mike Dodds.

Speaking to We Are Sunderland ahead of Saturday’s Championship match against Southampton, interim manager Dodds confirmed the latest injury blow to Evans, saying:

“Corry rolled his ankle this morning; nothing serious. There was some disagreement about whether he should play or not, but they decided to give him a couple more days.

“Corry isn’t playing on Monday but it’s more of a precaution than anything based on the fact he has been out for a period of time.”

Evans is set to return for Sunderland’s U21 match against Newcastle United later this month.

Evans, a former Manchester United trainee, has 408 career appearances to his record, including periods with Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, and Sunderland, 64 of which have come in red and white.

Evans played a key role in League One’s promotion-winning season in 2021/22, appearing 36 times, scoring two goals and assisting two more after reconnecting with former Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray at the Stadium of Light.
Evans faces a long road to recovery at Sunderland.

It has obviously been a difficult process for Evans.

He had already suffered a significant injury, and while this fresh setback appears to be modest, it does add to the likelihood that Evans may never play for Sunderland again.

His contract expires at the end of the season, and with only a few months left in the season, Evans is clearly in a race against time.

However, if he can play for the U21s at the end of the month, with a two-week international break in between, Evans may be ready to return to first-team action in April.

And it would be nice to see Evans back out there; Sunderland have definitely missed someone with his experience and steel in the middle of the park this season, and if Evans can make some excellent cameos for Sunderland, he’ll put himself in the shop window ahead of the summer.
