New Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided a lengthy response on Geno Smith that did not truly answer the question.

There were some uncertainties about whether the Seattle Seahawks would keep quarterback Geno Smith on the roster in 2024, but they elected to keep him.

However, just because Smith is still in Seattle does not guarantee he will start next season.

When asked if Smith would be taking snaps in September, new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided a lengthy response that did not truly answer the question.

“The first thing I want you to know, and everyone else to know, is that as an organization, we’re always looking, trying to figure out what’s best for the team,” Macdonald told Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic. “We will always endeavor to make the greatest decision for the team. I’m happy for Geno to come in here and start playing, working, and meeting coach – I mean, he’s met Coach [Ryan] Grubb – but to get to know Ryan and [quarterbacks coach] Charles [London] and get to work.”

So, does this indicate Smith will start or not?

“I don’t want you to feel like I’m dodging this answer but that’s what I’m excited about, for him to come in here and start to build this team the way we envision building it,” he said. “The only way to do that is to take it to work with you. That is what I am concentrating on, man. As possibilities arise across the entire squad, including the quarterback position, I suppose you could say that’s the value system that we live by here. I’m just excited for him to arrive on April 8th and begin work on our ’24 season.”

Essentially, Macdonald is not committing to Smith as the No. 1 signal-caller for next season, leaving you to question what the Seahawks’ strategy is.

Seattle owns the 16th pick in the NFL Draft next month, so it might potentially select a quarterback. Barring a trade, it will be unable to get one of the top prospects, but depending on how things unfold, it may be able to acquire someone such as J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr., or Bo Nix.

Or perhaps it will make a splash through trades or free agency?

Whatever the case, Macdonald does not appear to be particularly excited about starting Smith in 2024.

Geno Smith appeared in 15 games this season, throwing for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while completing 64.7% of his passes and earning a passer rating of 92.1. He wasn’t as good as he was in his breakout 2022 season, but he was still reliable.
