Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl left out Michael Ihiekwe and Will Vaulks against Leeds United.

The pair have been vital components of Wednesday’s recent recovery, with both turning in another strong performance in the win over Plymouth Argyle earlier in the week, so it came as a surprise to many when the XI for the game against Leeds was announced, and both of them were benched.

Wednesday went on to lose 2-0 at Hillsborough, and despite his disappointment, the Owls manager believes it was the correct thing to do.
“I don’t know if they’re really big decisions,” Röhl told The Star. “We have a great group, and as I look ahead to the week and the last few weeks, when we have midweek games, I have gained some experience that will benefit the club.

“Icky suffered cramping in the dying minutes of his game against Plymouth, and playing again two days later would have been risky. We have more games, and this is not the last one, so it was important to bring in new players. It was not about performance.

“My thought was about the fresh legs, and Leeds had a lot of games in recent weeks, so we sought to take advantage. After the game, you may argue if it was right or wrong, but from my perspective, it was the right option, even if the outcome was not what we desired.

“But for me it’s not about being down now, we’ll take the positive things and go forward.”
