Despite upcoming tough fixtures the Owls’ recent form and unity make them strong contenders for avoiding relegation boosted by fan support.

Sheffield Wednesday’s recent comeback under Danny Rohl has given the club a fighting chance of survival in the Championship.

The club announced the German’s appointment as manager in October, and he arrived at Hillsborough with the club at the bottom of the table, having taken only three points from their first ten games – their worst start to a season in history.

It resulted in Spaniard Xisco Munoz losing his job after only being hired in the summer. However, under Rohl’s leadership, the Owls have not looked back, and they are hoping for another season in the Championship following a disastrous start to their campaign.

Rohl’s team has made an incredible comeback since his arrival, but nothing has surpassed their most recent run.

The 34-year-old had a rocky start to his Hillsborough career, losing his first two games to Watford and Plymouth Argyle, but he won his first game on the third attempt, defeating fellow relegation rivals Rotherham.

The Owls would lose their next two matches before going three games unbeaten in the Championship, including a 1-1 draw at home against Leicester City.

Wednesday have won six of their 12 league games in 2024, including four consecutive victories for the first time in seven seasons, dating back to their 2016/17 Championship season under Carlos Corberan, when they finished fourth and lost to Huddersfield Town in the play-off semi-final. They accomplished this twice that season, going undefeated in April, including six victories.

Yorkshire rivals Leeds United ended that run on Friday night, with Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto scoring in either half, but it hasn’t dimmed emotions at Hillsborough, considering their team’s recent potential.

This has resulted in a significant reduction in the gap to the sides above them over the last few months, with Stoke City and Huddersfield now level on points ahead of the Saturday fixtures, with Rohl needing to take huge credit for his side’s ability to put themselves back in contention to avoid relegation.

Sheffield Wednesday’s next six fixtures

Following their defeat to Leeds on Friday evening, Rohl’s team will travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town the following weekend, before finishing the month at Hillsborough against Swansea City.

Next six opponents Venue Date
Ipswich Town A 16/03
Swansea City H 29/03
Middlesbrough A 01/04
QPR A 06/04
Norwich City H 09/04
Stoke City H 13/04

Following that, the club will travel to Middlesbrough and face Queens Park Rangers, before welcoming Norwich City and Stoke City to Yorkshire. Looking at the matches for relegation-threatened sides from now until the end of the season, you might argue that Wednesday has one of the more difficult run-ins, but they have the consolation of knowing that all of the surrounding sides must face each other before the season ends.

Despite their defeat to Daniel Farke’s team, the Owls’ recent form should and will boost their confidence as the season comes to a close.

Under Rohl’s brief stay at the club, there is a distinct manner of playing and what appears to be an agreement between the players and the staff, despite the lack of a leader throughout the early part of the season. That perfect partnership has produced results and highlighted the quality on their side.

There is no doubt that it will be difficult, but with a raucous Hillsborough environment and Rohl at the helm, Sheffield Wednesday have a better chance than anyone else to cross the finish line and remain in the second tier for another season.
