Former Sheffield Wednesday manager sets an unwanted record as new job goes from bad to worse

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has recently set an unfavorable record with new team Port Vale.

Moore has gone from winning the League One play-off final with Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley Stadium to facing relegation to League Two with Port Vale in the space of a year.

Moore led the Owls to victory last season, but he left at the start of the summer due to a disagreement with owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Moore returned to the bench with Sheffield Wednesday’s Yorkshire and relegation rivals Huddersfield Town after a few months away, but he was fired after only three wins in 22 games.

Moore then returned to the game in even less time, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract with League One club Port Vale.

Darren Moore’s record with Port Vale

Moore has now coached the Valiants for eight games.

He took over the team in 21st position in the table, with only a goal difference keeping them in the relegation zone.

But his debut game was a 3-2 setback to fellow strugglers Cheltenham Town, which set the tone for what came next.

Moore has only scored two points out of a potential 24, leaving Vale six points behind with nine games remaining.

Moore, who previously managed Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers, and West Brom, is currently struggling.

The 49-year-old saw his side lose 2-0 at home to promotion-chasing Oxford United last weekend, and Port Vale are now the only team in League One without a win in the previous eight games under Moore.

Their winless streak dates back to 2023; their last win was in their final game of last year, a 3-0 home victory against Blackpool, but they have gone winless in the 14 games since, picking up only four points.

Moore has had quite the rollercoaster of a year.

However, with five years remaining on his Vale contract after this season, he has arguably been given the stability to build with the club from what is expected to be League Two.

That’s a significant drop for a manager who won the League One play-offs last year, but it demonstrates his commitment to success as a manager.

Sheffield Wednesday fans will undoubtedly wish him well, as they hope Danny Rohl can keep their team from relegation this season.

Wednesday travel to Hillsborough later this month to play Swansea City in the Championship.
