New York Yankees is in a bidding war for the 31 year old with long-time AL rival

According to a new rumor, if the New York Yankees want to sign Jordan Montgomery before Opening Day 2024, they will face stiff competition from longtime rivals the Houston Astros.

With the start of the 2024 MLB season approaching, many of the elite players who were unexpectedly left in free agency earlier this month have finally signed. The National League Cy Young Blake Snell signed with the San Francisco Giants, while the New York Mets finally loosened their purse strings on Thursday, adding All-Star slugger JD Martinez.
Jordan Montgomery numbers for 2023: 10-11 record, 3.20 ERA, 1.193 WHIP, 166 SO, 48 BB.

Jordan Montgomery, a veteran of the Rangers, Cardinals, and Yankees, is the last remaining impact player in MLB free agency. With the recent announcement that New York ace Gerrit Cole will miss at least the first two months of the season due to a UCL injury, Pinstripes fans have called for the team to recruit a big arm to replace him.

This week, they came up short with Snell and 2023 All-Star Michael Lorenzen. Montgomery is the final viable player available, but according to New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees may face competition for Montgomery’s services from a bitter foe.

“The Rangers did well to sign Michael Lorenzen for $4.5 million with incentives. Could this have an impact on a prospective pursuit of Jordan Montgomery? “The Astros appear to be another candidate for Montgomery,” Heyman tweeted on Thursday.

Jordan Montgomery contract projection: 7 years, $165 million.

Montgomery helped Texas win the World Series in 2023 and is still considered a favorite to be re-signed. The Boston Red Sox have reportedly expressed interest, but the pitcher does not want to play there. The Astros were rumored to be interested in Snell, and they plainly want another arm. Adding a strong pitcher from an in-state competitor and preventing him from moving to New York makes a lot of sense before Opening Day on March 28.
