Cameron Sutton was at the Detroit Lions’ training facility in Allen Park when the organization learned of a domestic abuse warrant issued for him in Florida. Lions President Rod Wood told WJBK-TV Fox 2 on Monday that the team spoke with 29-year-old Sutton and advised him to surrender to authorities.
“We found out about the warrant at the same time as everyone else on social media,” Wood told the broadcaster. “We were able to speak with Cam because he was actually in our building. We located him. He was part of our strength staff. He showed up suddenly to work out.
Following the announcement of the warrant, the Lions released Sutton on March 21.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, which covers Tampa, has requested aid in locating Sutton, who has been in the NFL for seven years and recently finished his debut season with the Lions, helping them reach the NFC Championship Game for the first time in 32 years.
The warrant alleges domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in jail. The sheriff’s office stated that Sutton may be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a Florida license plate.
