Sheffield Wednesday blasted over ‘avoidable’ error in the defeat vs Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-0 away to Middlesbrough in the Championship on Monday.

Sheffield Wednesday returned to action on Easter Monday, travelling to Middlesbrough in the Championship.

It comes after Danny Rohl’s team ended the international break with a painful 1-1 stalemate at home to Swansea City on Friday.

The Owls dominated that game but were unable to win, while the game at the Riverside was a completely different tale.

Wednesday looked mediocre throughout and scarcely tested Seny Dieng in the Boro goal.

Middlesbrough led 1-0 at halftime owing to an unlucky Michael Ihiekwe own goal, and they had plenty of opportunities after the break.

Boro’s Michael Carrick finally increased their advantage with another unfortunate deflection, this time off Barry Bannan, and won 2-0 despite missing a penalty.

After winning four consecutive games, the Owls are presently winless in four, losing three of them.

Many expected the Owls to recover quickly following defeats to Leeds United and then 6-0 to Ipswich Town, but it has been difficult.

Sheffield Wednesday have faced some strong opponents, and they haven’t done themselves any favors in terms of defense.

The setback at Ipswich underlined Boro’s defensive vulnerabilities, particularly an inability to defend from set-pieces, which provided the opening goal today.

Danny Rohl needs to employ a set piece coach.
Rohl recently discussed employing a set-piece coach, but showed little enthusiasm in the idea.

But the game at Middlesbrough highlighted the need for one, and perhaps Rohl and Dejphon Chansiri will have to address it in the summer.

As Howson points out, this has been a frequent theme for the Owls this season, and if they had a set-piece coach from the start, they may have scored a lot more points.

They could have even gotten a point from Middlesbrough if they hadn’t conceded the early goal, despite being on the back foot throughout.

The Owls remain in 23rd place, two points from safety, with a crucial match against QPR this weekend.
