Cowboys Star Sends Cryptic Message on Dak Prescott

As speculation surrounding Dak Prescott’s future with the Dallas Cowboys grows, wide receiver Brandin Cooks is defending his quarterback. Cooks, fresh from a “throwing session” with Prescott, predicts Prescott will have a great season in 2024.

“Solid throwing session today,” Cooks wrote on X on March 28, 2024. “You thought four went crazy last year! Let’s just say that was only a look šŸ¹.”

Cooks’ statement comes just days after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport claimed that the Cowboys were willing to let Prescott play out the last season of his contract without an extension. Prescott has a no-franchise tag clause, which would make him an unrestricted free agent in 2025 if no new contract is reached.

“The Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year,” Rapoport wrote in a series of X messages on March 26. “Owner Jerry Jones stated, ‘We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.’

“There is no indication that a settlement is imminent. This appears to smooth the way for Dak Prescott to pursue free agency in 2025.”
Prescott’s struggle has not been regular-season production, since he is coming off one of his best seasons yet. Prescott’s playoff record with the Cowboys is 2-5, with no NFC Championships during his tenure.

Prescott threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions in 17 starts in 2023, completing 69.5% of his passes. The quarterback added 242 running yards and two touchdowns on the ground. It was one of his best statistical seasons, but the Cowboys’ blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round has dominated the offseason.

Dallas finished 12-5 throughout the regular season, had a perfect home record (until they lost to the Packers), and won the NFC East. Despite being favored by a score, the Cowboys appeared stunned against the Packers, leaving the season’s enduring impression.

Dallas has continued to publicly vow their support for Prescott, but if no new contract is agreed this year, the quarterback will be a free agent in 2025. According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the Cowboys do not intend to let Prescott depart in free agency.

This would necessitate the two parties ultimately agreeing to a long-term contract renewal. Spotrac estimates Prescott’s market value to be a four-year, $203 million contract, giving the quarterback an average yearly pay of more than $50 million.

“Regarding the Cowboys and Dak Prescott, I’m told the team does intend to work out a contract for their 3x-Pro Bowl quarterback and also has not closed off potential to consummate a deal for him this year, per source,” Anderson wrote in a message to X on March 27, 2016.

“While there is no offer or forthcoming talks, the team is not currently planning to let Prescott leave for free agency, despite some rumors to the contrary, I’m informed. Prescott’s whole contract history with the #Cowboys, including his rookie deal, tagging, extension, and restructures, all point to the ultimate aim.”
