Fernando Alonso ‘pushing very hard’ for major move as 2025 decision deadline set

Fernando Alonso wants his Formula One future decided before the summer, and the Aston Martin driver is apparently “pushing very hard” for a position at Red Bull.

Alonso faces a vital few months as he decides where his Formula One career will go next. The two-time World Champion has considered retiring, but there is also the possibility of intriguing opportunities emerging during what has already been a wild’silly season’.

Fernando Alonso chasing a Red Bull move?
Alonso’s current club, Aston Martin, is anxious to sign the 42-year-old to a new contract beyond F1 2024, but Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has listed the Spaniard as a possible replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who sparked the driver market drama by announcing his 2025 move to Ferrari.

There could potentially be an opening at Red Bull, with Sergio Perez entering the final year of his contract and neither Daniel Ricciardo nor Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull’s junior squad impressing driver programme boss Helmut Marko.

And, of all the probable options in the F1 2025 driver market, The Race reports that Alonso is “pushing very hard” to find out whether a move to Red Bull is on the cards before making a decision on his future, which he hopes to make before the summer.

Reflecting on his previous career moves, which have at times been questioned, such as his disastrous Renault and McLaren comeback, Alonso said: “Being the owner of my fate has helped and damaged me at times.

“I choose when to leave a team and when to join a team. I decided when to stop Formula One. And I picked when to return.

“And now I’ll decide what I’m going to do next year.” I will not follow what others do, even if they determine my fate. I shall do it on my own, for better or worse; it is just who I am.

“I don’t want to wait until the summer because I believe it will be unfair to me and the team if they have to find other possibilities or something like that. But I don’t want to rush and make a decision without thinking about next year.”

Alonso has regained the lead over Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll in F1 2024, though the regular podiums that marked the start of Alonso’s Aston Martin association in 2023 have not materialised this time, with Red Bull and Ferrari leading the way.
