Sheffield Wednesday deserve ‘big respect’ according to QPR boss despite league position

QPR manager Marti Cifuentes has stated that he has ‘great respect’ for Sheffield Wednesday as he prepares to face Danny Röhl’s team. This weekend, the Hoops will meet the Owls, hoping to go another step closer to Championship survival.

The R’s are now ranked 16th in the table, six points above the drop zone. They have six more games left to play this season.
Sheffield Wednesday remains in the relegation zone, alongside neighboring Yorkshire clubs Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United. The latter were officially relegated to League One after losing 1-0 at home to Plymouth Argyle on Friday night.

Röhl’s men are three points from safety and will be anxious to get three points against the Hoops. Their German manager has done an admirable job, but he has been playing catch-up since joining in October, following the club’s disastrous start to the season under ex-Watford player Xisco Munoz.

Cifuentes believes that despite their low league status, QPR’s forthcoming opponents merit attention. According to the club website, the player recognizes the significance of the game for both himself and Sheffield Wednesday.

“They will be unhappy after their last game, and they will see this as an excellent opportunity to reduce the gap on us and tighten things at the bottom.

“We know we need to keep developing and building on our victories over Birmingham and Swansea. We have a lot of respect for Sheffield Wednesday, especially because we lost to them last time, which is still fresh in my memory.

“It was one of those games (2-1 away at Hillsborough) where we had chances to complete the game, but we didn’t take them, therefore we were punished and lost.

“I’d like to think we’ve improved since then; we’re more defensively stable and emotionally mature.”

“We keep that result in our mind but we have full respect for Sheffield Wednesday as they’ve done really well since then.”

QPR are upbeat after winning 1-0 away to Swansea City last time out. They are unbeaten in their last three games.

Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, suffered a 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in their most recent match. Yorkshire have gone winless in their last four games.

They were promoted from League One last year after defeating Barnsley in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium under Darren Moore. Josh Windass scored a last-minute victory over the Tykes.
