Everton won’t care how they gain their points between now and the end of the season, as long as they acquire enough to survive.
Yesterday was a shining illustration of such a mindset, as they edged past a dismal Burnley side thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s extremely fortunate goal.
But he won’t care.
The previously misfiring striker now has two wins from two in the Premier League, ending a winless streak that had lasted since December.
A triumph is especially significant considering the possibility for negative outcomes.
Natalie Sawyer and Dean Saunders are upset over Everton’s deduction threat.
Speaking live on talkSPORT earlier today (07/04, 07:23 am), Natalie Sawyer and Dean Saunders agreed on the current Everton PSR debate, which is expected to be resolved at the start of next week.
After detailing the encounter and acknowledging that the Toffees were far from impressive, the later commentator was left more enraged by the Premier League’s off-pitch antics than yesterday’s relegation battle.
He noted: ‘How can this still be hanging over the league for everybody? For everybody who likes football, you’re still looking at the league table thinking: ‘Well Everton could still have points taken off them’.’
Sawyer would agree: ‘And keep in mind that Forest is appealing their point deduction, so who knows. They could receive points back. Everton may then file an appeal over their second probable point deduction. That will leave things in the air. This is ridiculous.
‘I appreciate that there are legal issues that must be addressed, which takes some time, but we cannot close the season with asterisks and no idea what will happen. That is not fair to each team participating. It’s ludicrous.’
Everton and Luton Town have blown open the relegation battle.
As Everton appeared destined to move away from the pack with their victory yesterday, Luton Town’s impressive comeback win at home to AFC Bournemouth put them in a far better position to avoid relegation.
So, with probably five teams now battling for the one remaining relegation slot, assuming Burnley and Sheffield United are already relegated, the Premier League is set for a dramatic conclusion.
The Toffees were far from impressive yesterday, but given the caliber of their opponent and the enormity of the encounter, they did well to come away with all three points.
Not only did it halt their unbroken winless streak, but it also saw them leapfrog Brentford and push Crystal Palace into the abyss.
They are only one point above Everton and so far from secure.
Wins for both Goodison Park and the Hatters have reduced the distance from 18th to 14th to just five points.
Fortunately, Sean Dyche’s team are in one of the strongest places, and they will believe that their favorable run of fixtures will provide ample opportunities to pull comfortably ahead despite their coming second deduction.
