Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl felt his “bold decision” to make substantial changes for the 2-0 win over fellow strugglers QPR was a success.
Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba scored for the Owls, who are fighting for survival in the Sky Bet Championship.
Rohl made five changes to his side following Monday’s setback at Middlesbrough.
He said, “We’ve changed a lot.” After the Middlesbrough game, it was evident to me that we couldn’t just keep going and hoping things would change.
“I believe some people will be astonished to see all of these changes. It was a daring decision on my part. I can’t just keep hoping. I wanted to witness a reaction, and I did.
Wednesday did not win any of their first 13 league games of the season, but their progress since Rohl took charge in October has given them a fighting chance of staying up.
The German stated, “We played very well and performed well as a team. I’m extremely happy. There are five games remaining, and we have a chance.
“Everyone was prepared for this conflict, and that is our job. Do it until the end.
“My and the players’ job is to hold a great party at the end of the season. Keep going, and we’ll throw a huge party at the finish.
“It is our job, and this is what I expect. With the appropriate thinking and attitude, we can accomplish it.”
QPR manager Marti Cifuentes condemned himself for his team’s failure.
He stated, “I’m quite upset, especially with myself. When I look back at the performance, I realize that I did not adequately prepare the team for the type of game that I anticipated.
“We were not good at all. It was a poor performance. I am upset not only with the outcome, but also with the game and the (lack of) quality we shown. This is a terribly disappointing day.
“I accept responsibility for the defeat. One result will not shake my belief in the players.”
However, Cifuentes suggested that Rangers had become complacent after recent back-to-back victories lifted them six points clear of the relegation zone and appeared to put them on track for safety.
The setback left them only four points ahead of the bottom three and in serious trouble.
Cifuentes went on to say, “That’s always the danger, not just in football, but in life. Sometimes we relax, and those moments are really harmful.
“When you think you’re doing so great, football always reminds you that if you’re not giving 110%, it’s very difficult.
“We tried all week to make them understand that this was a very difficult game, possibly the most difficult of the season.”
“It looked like Sheffield Wednesday were playing for their lives and unfortunately I was not good enough to convince my players we needed that kind of intensity.”
