Key witness during O.J. Simpson’s murder trial in issued a video statement Thursday afternoon

Kato Kaelin, a crucial witness in O.J. Simpson’s 1995 murder trial, released a video statement Thursday afternoon expressing his sympathies to Simpson’s family mourning the former NFL star’s death.

“Foremost, I’d like to express my condolences to the children, to Sydney and to Justin, to Jason and Arnelle,” he said. “Kato” Kaelin stated in a message published with X, formerly Twitter. “They’ve lost their father and that is never easy.”

Simpson’s family confirmed on Thursday that their father died at the age of 76 from prostate cancer.

Simpson played 11 seasons in the NFL, nine of them with the Buffalo Bills. He won four NFL running crowns and competed in five Pro Bowls. He eventually worked in show business before being acquitted in a 1995 murder trial for killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Kaelin also spoke to the families of Goldman and Brown Simpson.

“I would like to offer my love and compassion to the Goldmans, Fred, and Kim. “I hope you find closure,” he said. “Finally, to the family of the lovely Nicole Brown Simpson. Let us always cherish her memories. Nicole was a brightly shining beacon of light. “May we never forget her.

Context
Kaelin, 65, lived in a guesthouse at Simpson’s Rockingham estate in Los Angeles’ Brentwood district and was at home on the night Brown Simpson and Goldman were murdered. He was called to testify at Simpson’s trial to detail the suspect’s whereabouts that night, and he became something of a minor celebrity during the “Trial of the Century.”

According to The New York Times, Kaelin told investigators that he heard “several thumps” on the walls of his chamber the night of the murder. He also said that he had no idea where Simpson was for several hours.

While staying at Simpson’s house, Kaelin worked on his acting career and went on to host a number of television and radio shows in the years following the trial.
